Today, the Vagina Monologue is interpreted globally. Luckily, in Romania also and COMMA has hosted the event in Cluj-Napoca.
The aim of the event is to raise awareness on women’s rights and the violence many women and girls experience both here in Romania, and globally.
The purpose of the event: Vagina monologues
to shed some light on issues of female sexuality, (non)consensual sexual experiences, female genital mutilation and many more. COMMA shares the belief that Ensler herself stated “Women's empowerment is deeply connected to their sexuality.” The “Vagina Monologues” is based on different interviews reuniting real perspectives from women of all ages, sexualities, races. So, the main theme is discovering sexuality.
Breaking the taboos was successfully done, the word “vagina” repeated 130 times.
The first stories are about shame and fascination towards the female genitalia. About being ashamed of your body’s functions and its natural responses from the discovery of the clitoris to the “Flood”. But the play was not completely subjective as medical facts were also included one of them was female genital mutilation described medically and statistically. “Vagina Monologues” also expands the lense on womanhood and sexuality by giving a voice to queer and transgender women. The discriminations and physical violence were themes part of those stories giving a realistic perspective on the struggles LGBT+ people have to face even today. The ending is more of an ode given to the vagina and its ability to give birth
The outcome and the future- Normalize women’s sexuality. We want to break the taboos and misconceptions. Normalize the fact that women can be sexual beings just like men are.
- Raise awareness towards sexual abuse and rape as 55% Romanians think rape can be justified in certain situations.
- More shows of The Vagina Monologues an in Romanian to educate and normalize on the beauty of the Vagina
