16 days in Cluj, was a gender-based awareness event that took place from 25th of November until 10th of December. A awareness organized by COMMA together with a handful of local NGOs, all with the goal to start a conversation.
To bring awareness to the topic of Gender-based violence we had events throughout the 16 days. The events were hosted by the different NGOs involved and varied in order to reach as large of an audience.
COMMA came to host three events during these 16 days
The first event was together with a book club on the book "Room" and was followed by a discussion, here we got into topics on the role parents have in the upbringing of their children and what is a good prevention. We then had a movie night where the short film "Leaving" was played followed by a discussion surrounding domestic abuse and healthy relationships. Our last event and most sought after was the self-defense class, where two trainers from Krav-Maga martial arts donated their time. We were presented with the most common situations and how to get out of them, even when the opponent is larger, stronger and knows what they are doing. There were discussions on what defending oneself is and how far can one go in doing so.
The outcome from the event
We had many interesting conversations and questions asked by the attendees at the event. The themes of the events varied much like the issues concerning gender-based violence does. We hope to leave the 16 days having brought awareness that too often is seen as both a taboo and cultural occurrence in the Romanian culture.
